On 15th April, 1915, the 2nd Northumberland Fusiliers battalion of 84 Brigade, 28th Division moved into the front line at Zonnebeke in the Ypres salient. On 16th April the enemy brought forward a large trench mortar, a minenwerfer or Minnie and proceeded to demolish a 150 yard stretch of the battalion’s parapet. This was rebuilt overnight but at 6-30am on 17th April it was discovered that some of the enemy had established themselves in a gap between C and D Companies, They were immediately attacked, mainly with bombs (hand grenades) and by 7.30am they had been driven out. The rest of the day was relatively quiet until the evening when two minenwerfers opened up again and continued firing until 2nd Northumberland Fusiliers were relieved at 11pm and moved back to the New Huts Camp west of Ypres. One of the battalion’s casualties on this day was Albert Gold who was killed.
